Mule Deer
Texas is one of the overlooked, best kept secrets in the mule deer hunting world and Wildlife Systems offers excellent hunting opportunities on multiple private ranches in West Texas. Our mule deer hunts take place in a region where the subspecies is classified as desert mule deer (Odocoileus hemoinus crooki). Safari Club International recognizes these deer as a distinct deer category. Mature desert mule deer generally weigh 190-230 pounds on the hoof, sporting dichotomous forked 4×4 antlers with spreads typically 18” – 25.”
One of the intriguing and exciting features of mule deer hunting is the notion of being able to hunt a big game animal that is still relatively “unspoiled” and in an undeveloped area of North America. These are safari-style hunts, with our guide/hunter teams driving tens of thousands of acres per day, picking apart country with binoculars and stalking into mountains or thick brush to take a shot at one of these beautiful and unique deer.
Wildlife Systems’ mule deer hunting packages are set up to take the work out of the hunt so that your experience is all pleasure with little hassle. Each of these hunts are set up as 4 day programs with meals, lodging, guide, as well as skinning, caping of heads, and quartering of meat.
The facilities are modern, well-appointed cabins/lodges. No tents here and no roughing it. You will be comfortable, fed well, treated right, and provided with a quality desert mule deer hunt. Airport shuttle is not provided on these hunts, but we will get you detailed directions, so you can conveniently reach your mule deer hunting destination. Closest airport is Midland, which is 2.5 hours from your hunting destinations near Marathon. We do offer a hunt on one property where the clients stay in Marathon in a cabin and the lunches and dinners are taken at local restaurants.
We recommend a minimum of a 150 grain bullet that’s well constructed. Please, no highly expandable bullets such as Nosler Ballistic Tips, Berger bullets, or hollow points. We suggest A-frames, partitions, or bonded bullets that retain most of the bullet mass but will expand sufficiently. We recommend that your gun be sighted in dead-on at 100 yards. Bring a good set of binoculars, a small day pack, and any other regular gear that you would normally bring on this type of hunt.
Be sure to inquire about adding on a free-range aoudad sheep to your mule deer hunt. Javelinas and predators also roam this country. Big country and big smiles. What do you say? Give us a call at 325-655-0877 to set up your next mule deer hunt.
